Types of Pet Allergies

There are several types of allergies that pets can develop that may cause a reaction, including:

• Flea Allergy Dermatitis

  A flea's saliva can cause an allergic reaction in some dogs, resulting in flea allergy dermatitis. This can cause extremely itchy skin, particularly at the base of the tail. Their skin may become scabbed, red, and inflamed. Flea dirt (feces) is another sign of fleas, and you may occasionally see fleas themselves.

• Food Allergies

  Did you know that your pet's itchy skin could be a sign of food allergies or sensitivities? If you notice them scratching at their ears or paws, as well as potential gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, or a combination of the two, contact your veterinarian.

  It is critical to distinguish between food allergies and food sensitivities (intolerances). Food sensitivities, as opposed to food allergies, are a gradual reaction to a specific ingredient such as wheat, milk, beef, or chicken.

  Itching and chronic infections in the foot or ear, as well as diarrhea and vomiting, are all possible symptoms. True food allergies cause an immune response, which can result in skin conditions like hives and facial swelling.

• Environmental Allergens

  Environmental allergens, such as mold, pollen, and dust, can cause atopic dermatitis or allergic reactions. Seasonal allergies can also be a source of frustration because they may only affect your dog during specific seasons or times of the year.

  Look for signs of environmental allergies in your dog's paws and ears, just like you would for food allergies. Check the muzzle, around the eyes, wrists, underarms, ankles, and between the toes as well.

Symptoms of Allergies in Cats & Dogs

Symptoms of your pet's allergy may vary depending on the underlying cause. Among these symptoms are:

• Runny or stuffy nose
• Sneezing
• Hair loss
• Respiratory congestion
• Skin rash or hives
• Patchy, itchy, or flaky skin
• Head shaking and/or scratching (one or both)
